Swimming in open sea is my favourite sport: yet it scares me a little. As soon as I jump into the water, some sort of split tongued spirit talks and says out of the vast sea: “maybe you should sink and die”. When the spirit talks louder my worries can’t be denied. But alas, I never gave up. On the contrary I keep my eyes wide open, looking for some potential danger…
The waters out of Boracay’s beach are always damn crowded by fast boats cruising at any time of the day. It is a real hassle, since local pilots seem to care absolutely nothing of swimmers, nor to understand how fragile a floating man is. It’s hard for me to forget the time when a fast paraw nearly broke me down…The reckless driver simply couldn’t see me, I guess because the dusk…

Summer time is over, at last. I’m just coming from the beach: I dared once upon a time cold October waters and took my last swim. I’m almost frozen and now I don’t want to go out, I am not in the mood…The blues you know, the moody blues is always taking me over a little, in autumn…

In march 1990 the small cargo ship I was aboard as a passenger, broke out and died in Nias harbour.
I knew nothing of Nias but that it was a pleasant island very popular among surfers. I had to change my plans and instead of heading Sumatra, I stopped for a while in Nias. I found a nice bungalow and realized quickly that the greatest part of my neighbours were Australian surfers who had settled there since long. We soon became acquainted because of my sporty swimming the same rough waters and right “from the field”, I watched these skilled guys surfing…
Most of all, I learned that surfers are quite a community which, I fancy, has a strong and deep linkage with those ancient Polynesian surfers whose captain Cook’s lieutenant wrote the first account…
Surfers share the apparently basic philosophy of “ wait for THE wave and ride It ” as the culminating act of a lifetime! They don’t joke about and this makes surfboarding more than a simple sport.

Aug.15. What a mess! Summer holidays in Italy and everybody goes swimming! Even myself who braved the oceans…eh, eh, now braves crowdie beaches and dangerous local species, such as bunches of kids restlessly jumping into the water, and sun burned skin-divers who frantically crop tons …
