Melville’s novel “Moby Dick, or the Whale” has been a fundamental reading to me! Basically I was astonished by that powerful narrative which is not a newspaper story with the flavour of a novel! I still keep on reading a chapter or two from time to time…
I found an old copy of “Moby Dick” in a second-hand bookstore in Cebu City: I bought it and put it quickly in my baggage. I had soon to board a ship, heading south to Bohol Island, and I thought it was good to bring a book to read during the passage. As a matter of fact this book got me and for twenty days or so, I spent so many hours reading; I almost forgot where I was and I was in Alona, a beautiful white sandy beach, looking for a job as a dive master…
That’s power! Finally the book was over and I felt strangely uneasy: for some reasons I decided to quit a tempting dive master career…

“Small is beatiful” was a popular adage in Italy and it can be taken for the colourful, cute clownfish. Clownfish are relatively small organisms; fish in the wild can grow to a length of about 10 cm. Clownfish live in a mutual relationship with sea anemones. Once an anemone has been adopted, the clownfish will defend it vigorously. Clownfish are between my favourite underwater species due to their brilliant orange. My effort has been the rendering of that peculiar hue making use of a standard digital palette… I hope I got it!

Definitely, I have no idea about the number of species inhabiting coral reefs and no deep dive needs to find attractive schools of fishes, turtles and moray eels. Sometimes Wonderland is only a pair of meters deep, right under your goggles lenses: truly it ls hard to imagine more but I try anyaway by sketching this surrealistic eyed-fish. Actually Magritte’s paintings are in mind and, at least, I hope that my drawing would not damned by some illustrious ichthyologist!

Hammerheads are terrific and mighty creatures! I came across them only once, diving into the waters of Pescador Island, a well known tiny and rocky islet, just off the coast of Moal Boal, the Philippines.
I was thirty meters deep when I …
