No much time to post this week: I’m rather busy with the Cuprarte Art Festival opening, next Saturday. So I have drawn myself wearing a sarong. Sarongs are large sheet of fabric, wrapped around the waist and worn as a skirt by men and women throughout much of southeast Asia, parts of Africa, and on many Pacific islands. The fabric is often brightly coloured and printed with intricate, geometric patterns. In hot climates there is nothing better than wearing a sarong and I can’t give up the habit now and here, during a really warm Italian summertime. The members of a lovely African family living in the house opposite mine, watch me benevontely from their windows, and smile a lot…

In 1980 my father bought me a second hand Renault 4: I was very proud of it: its lysergic and bright green body made me very happy ! In July I decided to venture to Morocco driving my car: after all, in 1979 a Renault 4 was entered in the Paris-Dakar Rally and came 3rd while many cars didn’t even finish! All I had to do was bringing some spare parts with me and find someone who would join the trip. That was easy! On sunny early morning I left with a couple of friends. It was a long, long trip all the way trough South of France and Spain. After three days we f inally landed in Ceuta, the last Spanish possession in Africa. The day after we crossed the border and got Morocco, a great place to carry out a bit of adventurous car driving. My old, cheap, strong car was perfect for the task. She broke out and suddenly died a few years later, God only knows why…

Maybe I should put forward for this week’s topic my whole blog! Actually every Aynaku’s post relates to memory so I consider that my most recent submission should make no exception, and be one of Aynaku’s most typical. My very first time on board a sailing boat is firmly fixed in my mind: I was nine years old and the calling of wind and sea was already precise. I remember my excitement when the crew set sail and the boat left. It all happened under my parent’s benevolent and worried eyes. Waving their hands from the dock, they valued the possibility of an accidental jump into the water: still I couldn’t swim that well!
The second memory related to this illo, is my great fascination for Japanese ukiyo-e , a fascination dating back to my 1993 Japan trip. Really some memories can’t wait!

The island of Lamu, Kenya, was -and maybe still is- one of the most exotic places a beachcomber may expect to come across. I was there in 1981, at the end of my first, single and glorious trip to …

In his essay “art in landscape” Stephen Bann writes about Wordsworth’s prowess as a walker. Bann calculates that the great Romantic poet “must have traversed a distance of 175,000 to 180,000 English miles”.
