I like to edit again an old post of mine, which I wrote on November the 22, 2006…this fellow had a totally anti-routine life…it’s worth taking a look at his “biography” whic my friend Gino edited recently…
enjoy
Among the strange people I met, Max Maxwell is certainly the most unfathomable. I firstly met Max in Boracay Island, in 1990. Max comes from Bombay and belongs to the Parsee upper-class.
At that time he was a fit, middle aged man who enjoyed beach-tennis, wind surfing and excellent Italian food. He basically travelled between Boracay, Koh Lanta, Laddak and Hong Kong, making his earn out of fashionable batik-shirts, rattan-bags, Tibetan amulets and first rate (yet fake) Ray-Ban sunglasses. Max had an enormous ego, he was desperately scornful and selfish and, for some reason, he always surprised me. He had seen the World, that was the fact! When some harmless tourist, tried to approach him by asking silly questions such us “Have you been…?”, Max’s provocative answer simply was: “thanks for not talking to me!”. And that was all. As I said Max loved food and he was in the selected circle of acquaintances of my friend Gino.
Gino ran the cosiest restaurant in Boracay according to Max’s parameters and one day at Gino’s, for some unpredictable reason, Max allowed himself to talk to me! Max abhorred “stupid talks” but, after a good beer (he used to sip beer always by the same special glass that he-himself carried in a bag), Gino and I had the chance of glancing over his wonderful life…Finally Max decided to present Gino his photocopied biography. The document (his masterpiece) stated the man “born in Bombay during a devastating cyclone” and amazingly went on with Max ”making friends with Miles Davis, art-directing Vogue Magazine, etc…”I still have that rattan-bag he sold me and –still- I wear those fake pair of Ray-Ban and Gino and I still dispute about his reliability, his clever scorn and puzzling behaviour.
On December 8, 2006 I received a stunning report from Gino…

Max sounds awesome. I love that he said, “thank you for not talking to me”. I wish I had the guts to say that sometimes. How sad that he committed suicide. Your illustration is very good!
yours was a beautiful eulogy…
Oh my! He sounds like he lived life on his own terms and sadly felt he had to die that way as well. I love the illo…it captures the “character” you described so well!
Great notes on Max i m also very sorry for his loss in the end of the day he was a provocator and i’ m sure in this event his intension was to show that he had no fear even and mostly for the DEATH so our comment will be THANKS FOR GOING>>>>>> but its only another joke
Ciao massimo! The picture you made reminds me of that elusive guy. In those days we ran a business together. we had to finish the matters in under fifteen minutes everytime,if not,its either he gets irritated or he irritates you!I really have to end the conversation in less than 15 mins! Thanks but no thanks for ‘talking to me’
Best regards
Ah, you got me! The surprise was waiting at the end of what you had written. True or not, zing you got me…surprise!! In your world one second, out on the sidewalk blinking in the sun the next. Great illo and post! Wonderful!
ahhhh… he looks scarry!! please dont look at me.. mommyyy!!!
hihihi ^_^
oh my… reading till the end gave me the shivers! it’s so sad how people decide it’s time for them while other people who’s time is soon up, can’t accept that fact. i have friends who did the former and relatives who suffered the latter. and the strangest thing is.. all of them happen to depart from this world in “December”..
hearing the news of your friend touched deep memories in me..
Hei gays check the Max Maxwell ‘tortilla recipe in adventure chef blog http://adventure.aynaku.net and cheers
I thought I already post a comment to this but I don’t see it here. I must have imagined it
that could be my entry next week, which is now this week.
anyhow I will recap.
sounds like a fellow who doesn’t have any prob doing what he wanted at every moment. probably lived much more in his life than ten other people.
I love the shirt you have given him
it’s a powerful image that gives feel of powerful person.
great post
love scott
Max actually commited suicide on Ko Lanta / Thailand, not on Goa. He lived there for a few month every year for the past 10 years or so. For some time he came to my restaurant every day for lunch… not an easy customer really… and we also played beach-tennis every day for a while and had very interesting conversations…. strange man though, but I really liked him and I miss him a lot.
[...] “Pizza Connection” was the ironic name of a cosy, Italian beach-restaurant ran by Gino in Boracay Island. I was in the business for a while, working as a bartender. The construction was very small and basic: a wooden and bamboo hut with no electricity and running water. The signboard was bizarre; due to Gino’s satirical concept, it depicted the character of a moustached man (supposedly a standard Sicilian man), painted upon a bright-yellow and sun-shaped frame… There were just five tables, located by the beach and under the shelter of some beautiful coconut trees. The crystal-clear sea and the gentle breeze blowing, made the setting fantastic! At least that was our customers opinion while devouring and growing fat (particularly at dinner) Gino’s homemade pasta dishes and creative pizzas, at the very dim light of kerosene lamps… Among the customers were some friend of us, such as the elusive parsee Max and Mike, an English architect based in Hawaii, who once convincingly declared the “Pizza Connection” being among the best restaurants he had visited World round! I wonder but it’s a fact that the place was quite popular because of its ecological minimalism and location, and the chef ‘s legendary creativeness! • • • [...]
A fine illustration for a fascinating tale. Thanks for sharing it!
i like his eyebrows. great patterns and thanks for sharing the story.
aww that was a shocking ending.. and i was about to say something about Boracay.. now i lost my trail of thoughts.. suicide is such a big thing for me.. i saw a friend after committing one and still bothers me after almost a decade..
but your illo is nice.. that i did not forget 8)
missing your work… but i know how it is… hope all is well…

When are you coming back? You haven’t been swallowed by the sea have you, August is long passed, and yet no word or beautiful paintings about where you’ve been.
