monkey animal-rights aynaku travel illustration

I always hated the zoo. Simply I try to figure the way an animal feels behind the bars of a cage, or what it might prefer to do instead. I like to think that every living creature was born to be somehow free, so set them free…
The cute, black, little monkey spent long hours jumping frantically inside its narrow bamboo cage. My bungalow’s neighbour, an excited fellow and an absolute beginner of the Tropics, had bought it at the local market place for a few ringit, maybe thinking to help some poor Malay chap’s wealth.
The poor animal deprived of its freedom, was moreover tortured by the constant sight of a bunch of yellow, small and extremely sweet bananas that had been bought on the purpose to feed the monkey but carelessly left nearby. And every day, as soon as the fellow came back at sunset from the beach, the little starving monkey had its meal lastly. Fortunately after a couple of weeks the proud tourist left alone, thinking that I might possibly take care of his monkey; and I did so setting the monkey free in the forest, with its belly full of bananas…

Nice illustration Aynaku. Glad to know the monkey was set free in the end! I remember seeing an orangutan in a zoo in China. It sadden me when I saw him climbing up to the top of the cage, unfolding those wires of the outer layer thinking he might be able to escape.

Ciao,
Molto espressiva la tua illustrazione.
Non preocuparti, molti di noi siamo delle scimiette in gabbia…Alcuni no, forse…

my heart goes to the animals on the zoo, too. but i think it’s some kind of dilemma, for some animals, when they were left free in nature, humans would hunt them endlessly.. so one or two would have to sacrifice and stay behind the bars to protect them from the extinction… i don’t know, i’m just rambling. ;p

I can’t stand the zoo either, Massimo. It’s so cruel and so sad to see the animals in cages :’(

They always should be free.

Hai colto tutta la disperazione e la rabbia della scimmietta prigioniera!
Che bella sorpresa il tuo commento in italiano sul mio blog!

Nice take on the theme. I’d go bananas too, if I was caged! Thanks for sharing your story.

I don’t like the zoo either, but your illustration is awesome. What a great touch to add a gradient to his tummy!

this is a cool illo entry!

i went to the zoo with my son (they had an “educational trip” at school) and he asked me why the animals are all in a cage.. i simply set so that they wont go away. then we saw this flamingos that are not caged, only fenced! so now i asked myself.. how come they dont fly away?

anyway.. was planning to post an illo of it for IF but i just dont have time.. it would be good for my blog birthday tho..
