Ginza is a central area of Tokyo where many art galleries are. The area is more like a typical city centre: lots of big buildings, a bunch of department stores and several large corporations. I used to go to Ginza often, visiting dozen of galleries and trying to sell some drawings of mine, and I was successful at last. I remember the precise feeling of being captured while walking along those streets by crowds of busy, hurried, resolute business men, invariably wearing grey men suites: their hair was always perfect!
How great was my surprise when I came across the huge (mini?) aquarium -some 6 mt.- long, in front of the Sony store, on the street where the same crowds admired -for a while- those really amazing and captured tropical fish, several of which I recognized from my stay in the Philippines. This captivating and colourful fish-tailored prison, seemed to me the right metaphor for Tokyo’s life style, and I couldn’t stop thinking about Joseph Conrad’ gloomy quote stating: “It is to be remarked that a good many people are born curiously unfitted for the fate waiting them on this earth”…Again, too many reflections!

Illustration Friday’s topic is: capture

This is a unique idea for the theme and it’s great that all of your inspiration comes from your travels through this life! Love your buildings and the shapes and colours are perfection!

What a quote! Both, your illustration and your story, fit the same feeling I get when reading Haruki Murakami. I wonder what the message is from those who installed the aquarium. To show a beautiful side of capture? To soothe?

That must have been quite an experience, stumbling across something so out of place but so beautiful. Ah, to have had just a few of your adventures. You “captured” this moment from your memory so nicely. A real treat for the eye!

Fantastic very cool idea. Your illustration is gorgeous. I love the way this lively colorful area looks in front of the buildings. Fantastic.

Yet another beautiful piece. You put so much time and effort into your work, and it shows.

i can’t help seeing the world as a giant aquarium at times and your illustration captures the feeling so well… although i would imagine tokyo as an aquarium would hold more schoolss of fish as it is so homogenous at first glance… it is only upon closer examinationthat one can realize all the wonderful qualities in the inhabitants but the city moves by so quickly one doesn’t have the time…

I ahven’t been to toyko… yet… but my wife lived and worked there so i have heard the stories… the sea of asians with a tall westerners head bobbing above the throngs on the streets… we have often talked about moving there now that we have a family… the culture there is so much safer… she said that they don’t tolerate criminals in their families… it may be a hard thing to do but it does lead to a better world in some ways…

I was looking at this picture the other day. It made me miss Tokyo! I was thinking about how scary it might be to live there (after my visit) but saw your great illo and thought, hmm, Tokyo was cool, why shouldn’t I live there?
