speed…

Penang Island is the oldest English settlement in Malaysia, predating Singapore. Penang’s major town, Georgetown, is a real Chinatown with far more Chinese flavour than Singapore, Hong Kong or Shanghai.
Those cities had their flavour sadly submerged under a gleaming concrete, glass and chrome disorder: in the older parts of Georgetown the clock seem to have stopped fifty years ago…
It’s a slow pace, easy going, colourful city where the bicycle rickshaws are still the most sensible means of transport; trishaws wobble by with whole families aboard as well as with overloaded western tourists!
Trishaws are definitely the ideal way of getting around Georgetown’s narrow and congested streets, particularly at sunset, when getting around takes on almost a magical quality. Many of the usual Georgetown’s events take place at that time: there is a wide selection of night markets and street food stalls that get going around 8pm. Perhaps the funniest stall I came across was a tea stall with a signboard announcing that their medicated tea would cure everything, from headache to kidney troubles, malaria and, would you believe, “far-tulence” !
Illustration Friday’s topic is speed

“far-tulence”? LOL… my sis mentioned about those night stalls when she have visited that place 3 years ago.. and im gonna aske her about that tea that claims to cure everything! ha! and a cool illo btw!
It´s great how the rikshaw driver (you gave him the perfect hairdo!) + tourist stick out against the shady skyline, the old, the new, the foreigner coming together, a conglomerate of history and now…
Did you try to cure anything with the medicated tea? :)
Wee Hee! Sounds fun and romatic. Great post.
love
lovely and colorful. it must really be ideal having those air on your face on a warm day or night.
do you own one of the building over there with your name on it?
beautiful illo! I love your technical.
I’d love to do that!
These are very similar to the bike taxis we saw in Nicaragua; brought back some good memories. Thanks!
Very cool. I so want to ride one of these one day. :-)
I love the colours you have chosen for the foreground bright and vivid, and love the misty receding background. Cool that you have your own building too! Riding in a rikshaw must be a thrilling feeling with everything and everyone whirling all about! You captured it so well!
Great illo and colours, I love the Aynaku headquarters ;-) Also the background buildings vanish beautifully. I was just to see an art show ARS-06 in Helsinki and loved the Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba DVD work where the trishaws were racing under water. A strong piece speaking for the vahinshing jobs.
Have you tried ‘teh halia tarik’ at a stall near Chowrasta Marker. You don’t need alka seltzer, a cup of teh halia tarik will do :))
Wow… your colors are just GREAT, they really glow! Love this one. I want to ride in it. ; )
Big colorful smooch,

ciao aynaku/massimo
it’s always a pleasure reading your “inside” stories and look at your great illustrations!
ciao
Your illo is cool. Great details. Wish I have some of your skills.
I love trishaws! It’s been awhile since I’ve rode on one of these. The last was in Nepal and I had to hang on for dear life cos the rider was going so fast and the seats were reclined at 45 degrees! Haha…but it was fun.
What can I say? This is simply one of the best ideas and illustrations on the word “speed”. The drawing is gorgeous, great colours and the story which accompanies it is sweet. Being Malaysian and reading what you wrote on a part of my homeland is refreshing.
I am sure Asian life/culture (including medical rememdies) seen through a pair of Italian eyes is thought provoking.
Well done again. I love this illustration!
cool take, and cool blog too. bookmarking it for easy reference :)
Your blog is always such a joy to visit, I love your beautiful colors and your wonderful stories. Just scrolling up the page is an undulating treat. Your attention to detail is superb!
