I experienced sea-voyages mainly in Indonesia (an archipelago of fourteen thousand islands) and the Philippines (seven thousand islands). In these countries people basically must move by ship and the fares are cheap. Passages are sometimes unforgettable especially if you get a third-class ticket. Here, in the deep belly of the ship, a few hundreds reckless and never resting natives eat, sleep, talk, bet, take care of their goods and animals (usually fighting cocks, at least in the Philippines…). Here, in the belly, you might find a few lonely and self proclaimed “hard-boiled” travellers, lying in their berths (berths on fire…) while questioning themselves on what sort of anthropological urge or chronic lack of money brought them over there!
Nevertheless my broken sleep and the lack of comforts, these cruises have been really formative. In a few days passage I always enjoyed the sunset sea breeze on the deck and I learned a lot about habits, food and lifestyle of the natives.

neptune mythology tatoo sea poynesia aynaku illustration adobe

This week Illustration Friday topic is “remote” .

So here is Neptune, a character I first sketched in a remote corner of a remote island, during a remote time of my life… let’s say around twelve years ago!
I always enjoyed mythology and its remote meanings: mythology is a huge art repository. While travelling, I was completely overwhelmed by the ritualistic representations of Hindu Pantheon depicted in the temples of Southern India, Bali, Penang, Mombasa; and the tattooed deities from the remote Pacific Islands…
Nevertheless Neptune has always been my favourite God and still he is!

eye fish surrealism aynaku illustration adobe

Definitely, I have no idea about the number of species inhabiting coral reefs. No deep dive needs to find attractive coral sceneries, schools of fishes, turtles and moray eels. Sometimes Wonderland is only a pair of meters deep, right under your goggles lenses…it looks hard to imagine more.
I’m trying by this surrealistic “eyed fish”. Actually I was thinking about Magritte’s paintings…I hope my drawing would not damned by some illustrious ichthyologist!

“Hovering! That’s the supreme underwater task: control your breathing, keep your body floating between bottom and surface… perhaps meditate!”
I still remember my diving-instructor tips and I remember the underwater scene: imagine this …
